As parents we all rejoice at the thought of our kids being old enough to drive and continue their journeys into adulthood yet we cannot help but dread it at the same time. With all the modern technology that is out today from ipods, tablets, and smartphones we know just how easy the roads can become hazardous with negligent drivers. And even though we hope to never be in an accident the truth is at times it is inevitable. Even if we make sure to teach our kids proper safety and awareness on the road, it does not mean everyone else does the same. That’s why we have compiled a list of our four safest Toyotas that we are sure your new driver will feel comfortable, cool, and safe in.

Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius has plenty of features that make it an extremely safe car. Standard features include:

  • Rearview Camera
  • Anti-Lock Disc Brakes
  • Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Front, Side Curtain, and Driver Knee Airbags

The Toyota Prius gets outstanding reviews from the IIHS. It gets the highest possible rating in most categories, including whiplash protection, side impact, roof strength, and moderate-overlap, frontal-offset impact.

Toyota Camry

The 2015 Camry comes with the same safety features as the Prius, making this model an equally sensible option for teenage drivers. To make the car as safe as possible, however, you will need to add a few options.

If you buy the XSE or XLE, you can add a blind-spot warning system that will help inexperienced drivers stay away from avoidable collisions. If you add the Advanced Technology package, you get pre-collision warning and lane-departure warning systems that are useful for drivers of all experience levels.

The XLE also lets you add Toyota’s Safety Connect feature. Safety Connect will give your teen an emergency assist button to get help immediately if he or she ever has an accident. The IIHS gives the Camry its highest rating in all categories. It does, however, recommend that you get the optional features for maximum safety.

Toyota Highlander

If your family prefers SUVs to sedans and hatchbacks, then you will get the most out of the 2015 Toyota Highlander. With 8 seats and nearly 14 cubic feet of cargo space, this is the perfect option for teens who are expected to run errands and drive their younger siblings to afterschool events.

Since your young driver might have the whole family in tow, you will want to take a close look at the Highlander’s safety features. Standard features include:

  • Full-Length Side Curtain Airbags
  • A Driver Knee Airbag
  • Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Anti-Lock Disc Brakes

In other words, even the lowest trim level is fully stocked. Like most Toyota vehicles, you get additional features by choosing higher trim levels or adding packages.

Whether you choose to add features or not, IIHS tests show that this is a safe car for teen drivers. It gets top the IIHS’s rating in all but one category, small overlap front. Since that category gets an Acceptable rating (second-best), it’s not a serious concern.

RAV4
