Safety Features and Ratings

All of the Toyota sedans have strong safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Some, however, are a little better than the others. The Camry stands out as the safest of Toyota’s sedans. It gets top ratings in every crash category. With some optional equipment, it also gets an Advanced rating in front crash prevention from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Avalon also gets exceptional ratings in all crash categories. With some optional equipment, it also gets a Basic rating in front crash prevention. Depending on your concerns, you might find the Prius slightly safer than the Avalon. While its optional features get an Advanced front crash prevention rating, IIHS gave the hatchback an Acceptable in small overlap front crash tests. That’s the second-highest rating from IIHS.

The Corolla gets a Marginal rating in small overlap front crashes, which is a step down from the Prius. Still, it gets positive ratings that show it’s a safe car for any type of driver.

Fuel Efficiency

If you are primarily concerned about fuel efficiency, then there is no question. You will want to buy a Prius. As a hybrid, it has technology that will get you about 50 mpg. It will save you money and time by keeping you away from the gas pump.

Some people, however, worry that hybrids aren’t right for their lifestyles. If you aren’t willing to step into that realm, the Corolla or Camry will give you good results. The Camry gets about 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The Corolla is ever so slightly better with 27 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway.

The Avalon, which offers more power than the rest of the Toyota sedan family, gets about 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Toyota Sedan Performance

Not surprisingly, the sedans that give you better fuel economy tend to give you less power. The Avalon’s 3.6-liter V6 engine chugs out 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. If you really give it some gas, the V6 will get you to 60 mph in about 6.4 seconds.

  • The Prius offers less get-up-and-go than other cars in this group. Don’t expect it to reach 60 mph in less than 10.2 seconds.
  • The Corolla isn’t that different from the Prius. If you choose the LE Eco engine, you will get 140 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque. It can go from zero to 60 mph in a little over nine seconds.
  • The Camry’s power differs considerably depending on the engine you choose. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine can reach 60 mph in 8.3 seconds. Upgrading to the 3.5-liter V6 will get you there in 6.2 seconds.

Each of these sedans have excellent features. Assess your car must-haves and take a test drive before making your final decision.
